Why I Started Burt's Rec Room: A Story of Bad Gear, Hard Lessons, and Building Something Better

If you've spent any amount of time around the outdoors, firearms, emergency preparedness, or tactical gear, you've probably bought something that looked amazing online... only to find out it was complete junk.

Trust me, you're not alone.

Hi, I'm Brian, the owner of Burt's Rec Room, and for years I've been what most people would call a gear nerd.

I love testing equipment.

Not sitting behind a keyboard reading spec sheets or watching marketing videos. I mean actually loading it up, taking it outside, putting miles on it, dragging it through the mud, carrying it all day, and seeing what happens when it gets used the way it was supposed to be used.

Sometimes the gear surprised me.

Most of the time, it disappointed me.

Expensive Doesn't Always Mean Better

Over the years I've spent thousands of dollars chasing the "perfect" loadout.

Every new backpack promised to be more comfortable.

Every pouch claimed to be "mission ready."

Every piece of equipment was supposed to be stronger, lighter, and tougher than the last.

Reality was different.

Zippers failed.

Stitching came apart.

Buckles snapped.

Cheap materials wore out faster than they should have.

Sometimes the equipment was so poorly designed you wondered if the people who built it had ever worn it themselves.

The frustrating part wasn't buying cheap gear.

It was spending good money on premium-priced gear that couldn't survive real use.

Every mistake cost money.

Every mistake also taught me something.

Building a Better Loadout

After years of testing gear, I realized something.

There is no perfect loadout.

There is only the loadout that works for your mission, your experience, and your environment.

A lightweight hiking setup in the mountains looks very different from a truck emergency kit.

A law enforcement officer needs different equipment than someone building a bug out bag for their family.

An experienced outdoorsman can often carry less because knowledge weighs nothing.

That lesson changed how I looked at gear forever.

The best equipment isn't always the newest.

It isn't always the most expensive.

It's the gear that works when you need it.

The Dream That Wouldn't Go Away

While I was testing equipment, another idea kept growing in the back of my mind.

I wanted to own a tactical store.

Not because I wanted to sell stuff.

Because I wanted to build the kind of place I wished existed when I was buying my own gear.

If you've spent much time visiting gun shops, you've probably experienced it.

Dark rooms.

Dusty shelves.

Employees more interested in talking to each other than helping customers.

People making beginners feel stupid for asking honest questions.

That's never made sense to me.

Nobody starts as an expert.

Every experienced shooter, hunter, prepper, or outdoorsman was new once.

People should be encouraged to learn, not embarrassed for trying.

That's Why Burt's Rec Room Exists

When I finally had enough money to take the leap, I started Burt's Rec Room with a simple philosophy.

Sell gear I'd trust myself.

Help people honestly.

Treat everyone with respect.

If something isn't worth owning, I don't want to sell it.

If there is a better option, I'll tell you.

If I don't know the answer, I'll tell you that too.

Trust is worth far more than a quick sale.

So... Why "Burt's Rec Room?"

People ask me that all the time.

The answer comes from one of my favorite movies, Tremors.

There's an unforgettable scene where Burt Gummer's underground gun room is attacked by one of the giant creatures.

As the wall explodes inward, Burt famously shouts:

"You broke into the wrong goddamn rec room!"

That scene always made me smile.

Most people think of a rec room as a place for games.

I thought...

What if a rec room was stocked with everything you'd need when things went sideways?

That's the vision.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Preparation.

Whether you're heading into the woods, putting together an emergency kit, building a truck loadout, preparing for a hunting trip, or simply enjoying time at the range, having dependable equipment matters.

More Than Just a Store

Burt's Rec Room isn't just about selling tactical gear.

It's about sharing what I've learned after years of expensive mistakes.

It's about helping people become more capable.

It's about building a community where beginners and experts are equally welcome.

Over the coming months and years, I'll be sharing gear reviews, bug out bag builds, overlanding equipment, emergency preparedness, firearms accessories, lessons I've learned the hard way, and plenty of honest opinions about products that simply aren't worth your money.

If I can save you from making even a few of the mistakes I've made over the years, then every busted zipper, broken buckle, and disappointing purchase was worth it.

Welcome to Burt's Rec Room.

We're just getting started.
