I Went in for a Gun Case. I Came Home With a Canik TTI Combat

I Went Looking for a Gun Case and Came Home With a TTI
Saturday started out like a pretty normal Saturday.
My wife, the Shop Diva Nova Sky, and I headed out to check out a new gun store. Nova, for those who don't know her, is our 6.7-pound Yorkie who goes pretty much everywhere with me. The range, the shop, road trips, you name it. She even has her own Instagram account, because apparently being a six-pound dog with a better travel schedule than most people deserves its own media presence.
As we walked into the store, the first thing I noticed was a sign advertising 20% off everything.
My first thought was pretty simple.
You and I both know they don't mean 20% off guns.
I've seen enough “20% off everything” sales to know there is usually an asterisk hiding somewhere. Maybe it means everything except firearms. Maybe everything except ammunition. Maybe everything except the stuff people actually came into the store to buy.
So I didn't think much about it.
We walked through the store, past the sports merchandise, foam fingers, beer cozies and all the other things that apparently belong in a gun store these days, and eventually made our way into the gun room.
I wasn't there to buy a gun.
I actually had a pretty specific mission.
I needed a handgun case.
I've got a nice range bag, but I wanted a dedicated case for the handgun before putting it inside the bag. Nothing complicated. Walk in, find a case, pay for it, walk out.
Simple.
Naturally, that's not how it went.
I started looking around at some of the ammunition because they had some good prices. Then I started looking at bags and found a Browning range bag that caught my attention.
And then I saw it.
A Canik TTI Combat Smoke.
I'd already been paying attention to the TTI Combat. It's one of those guns that stands out even before you pick it up. The Smoke finish gives it a look that's different without being ridiculous, and the TTI name carries some weight with anyone who follows competitive shooting or the firearms industry.
Still, seeing one on a shelf is one thing.
Picking one up is another.
I waited for someone behind the counter and asked to take a look.
The moment I put it in my hand, I knew this wasn't going to be as simple as buying a gun case.
I have big hands. Really big hands. Full-size handguns usually don't feel huge to me. In fact, some of them can almost look undersized once they're in my hands.
That's one reason subcompacts have never really been my thing.
But the TTI felt different.
It just felt right.
The grip filled my hand without feeling awkward. The controls were where I expected them to be. I worked the magazine release and watched the magazine drop cleanly. I worked the slide and immediately noticed how smooth everything felt.
There was a sense that somebody had actually thought about how all of these pieces were supposed to work together.
I wasn't just holding another handgun.
I was holding something that felt like it belonged in my hand.
I put it back on the counter.
Then I said, “Let's start the paperwork.”
That's when I noticed a few people looking over at me.
I couldn't tell if they were watching because I had spent a good amount of time going over the gun, or because I had just decided to drop around a thousand dollars on a competition pistol without much hesitation.
Maybe it was a little of both.
The funny part was that I hadn't walked into the store planning to buy a gun at all.
I was looking for a case.
And then there was that 20% sign.
Except this time, the sign wasn't lying.
They really meant 20% off everything.
Including the gun.
Including the case.
That made the decision a little easier, although I'm not sure how much convincing I really needed by that point.
The Canik TTI Combat Smoke came home with me.
So did the case.
And somewhere along the way, a Saturday trip that was supposed to be a simple shopping run turned into the beginning of a new review project.
I'll be putting the TTI through its paces, including getting some real range time with it and eventually measuring the trigger with an actual trigger-pull gauge. Looking at a number somebody else posted online is one thing. Putting the gauge on the gun in front of the camera and finding out what this particular gun actually measures is another.
But there's something else about this purchase that matters to me more than the gun itself.
There was a time when buying something like this would have meant thinking about the money for days. Could I afford it? Should I spend it? What else does that money need to cover?
This time, I worked hard, looked at something I wanted, decided I wanted it, and bought it.
There's something satisfying about reaching a point where you can do that.
Not because you need another gun.
Not because you need to prove anything.
Just because you've worked for what you have, you've taken care of the things that matter, and every once in a while you're allowed to enjoy the results.
When you work hard, you should be able to play hard, too.
That's probably the part of this story I didn't expect when I walked through the door.
I went looking for a handgun case.
I came home with a TTI.
And thanks to that rare occasion when a store actually means 20% off everything, I came home with the case for less money, too.
Sometimes you go into a gun store looking for a case.
Sometimes you walk out with a gun.
And sometimes, if you're lucky, the sign really does mean 20% off.
This time, I got all three.
A new case.
A new TTI.
And a pretty good reminder that sometimes it's okay to enjoy the results of all that hard work.
